Bernardo Silva’s first goal of Euro 2023, Samet Akaydin’s disastrous own goal and Bruno Fernandes’ tap-in helped Portugal ease past Turkey 3-0 on Saturday

Silva gave Portugal the lead in the 21st minute, with Nuno Mendes’ cross mercifully deflected into his path by Akaydin, who glanced the ball past goalkeeper Alte Bayinder seven minutes later.

Fernandes finished the contest more effectively on 56 minutes with a selfless pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, who would become the oldest goalscorer in European Championship history.

The win ensures Portugal progress while Turkey must avoid defeat against the Czech Republic on Wednesday, who drew 1-1 with Georgia on Saturday, to be sure of progressing to the knockout rounds.

Turkey, who had lost all three of their previous European Championship games to Portugal without a goal. They set up more defensively in their opening game after conceding too many chances to tournament debutants Georgia.

Although they often play from the back and the gamble almost paid off after 30 minutes, a last-man challenge from 41-year-old defender Pepe prevented Orkun Kokku from breaking clear.
