SAFF Women’s Football Championship starts today

Kathmandu: The SAFF Women’s Football Championship is being held in Kathmandu from Tuesday.

Seven teams are competing in the tournament including former winners India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bhutan along with Nepal.

Nepal will face Bhutan in the opening match of the tournament to be held at Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwar on Tuesday. The match will be held at 5:30 PM according to Nepali time.

The tournament is scheduled to be inaugurated by Youth and Sports Minister Maheshwarjung Gahatraj.

The participating 7 teams are divided into two groups. Nepal is in group ‘B’ which is considered relatively easy.

Along with Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan are in this group.

Similarly, in Group A, the past winners are India, Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Pakistan is going to participate in the SAFF Women’s Football Championship after 8 years.

After the group stage matches, the top two teams in the group will qualify for the semi-finals. The final match will be held on October 3.

In the five editions of Women’s SAFF, Nepal has become the runner-up four times. India defeated Nepal in the final of the last edition held in Biratnagar, Nepal.
