Kathmandu: Canada has been qualified for the FIFA World Cup after 36 years. Canada will play their first World Cup since 1986 with a 4-0 win over Jamaica in the Central and North American selections on Sunday night.
Canada was eliminated from the group stage of the World Cup in Mexico without a win.
Canada took the lead in the first half after Kel Larin and Tazanne Buchanan scored. Jamaica’s Adrian Mariappa committed suicide in the second half when Junior Hallett scored a goal.
The BMO Field stadium in Taranto was filled with joy by home fans after being selected in the World Cup for the tenth time in history.
Eight teams are participating in the final round of Central and North American selections. Mexico, the United States and Costa Rica are vying for two places to be directly selected as Canada secures its place in the final round. The final phase is between Costa Rica and the United States, as well as Mexico and El Salvador.
The top three teams in the selection competition will play the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November-December. The fourth-placed team will play in the Intercontinental Playoffs.
