The 38-year-old O’Brien last played against Namibia in the T20 World Cup in the UAE in 2021. He was not in the team after that.

O’Brien retired from ODIs last year and said that he would continue in Tests and T20Is. Although O’Brien wants to stay in the team until the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia next October-November, he intends to retire after not being part of the team.

“Today I have announced my retirement from international cricket after 16 years and 389 games for my country.

I was hoping to end my career at the T20 World Cup in Australia, but I haven’t made the Irish team since last year’s World Cup.

I have the impression that selectors and management are looking for something else,” O’Brien wrote.

He said that he enjoyed every minute of playing for Ireland and that he had many good moments while playing for the national team. He thanked all the coaches and his family who helped him in his career.

O’Brien says he is now at the next stage of his life and career and the time is right. He has revealed that he will now start developing his own coaching academy and that there are some good opportunities in the future.

Similarly, he hopes to get an opportunity to get experience of training abroad and work with some international teams. He has played three Tests, 153 ODIs and 110 T20Is for Ireland.

He has scored a century in every format and has scored one century each in Tests and T20 and two centuries in ODIs.
